2018 report

Vivian Cheruiyot and Eliud Kipchoge of Kenya are the winners of the biggest and hottest London-Marathon ever. Wheelchar champions are Madison de Rosario (US) and once again British hero David Weir.

A record field of 40,188 runners finished the 38th London Marathon. Also the temperature of 24°c is a record. Just after 8 pm, clocking 9:33 h, the last runner got her medal. The rate of female participants increased to a record of 40.5%.

Male and female elites set off at world record pace with impressive half marathon splits of 1:01:00 and 1:07:16. But then they had to pay tribute to the heat of the day. Mary Keitany fell back to 5th place and 2:24:27, Tirunesh Dibaba quit. Vivian Cheruiyot kept calm at the beginning and made a constant high level race to a surprising win. She improved her PB by 5 minutes and is now the world's number 4 at 2:18:31.

Eliud Kipchoge reigned the race and cruised to a safe win after 2:04:17. 21-year-old Tola Kitata of Ethopia made it to second place after 2:04:49 and local hero Mo Farah fulfilled the expectations as 3rd on the podium and setting a new British record at 2:06:21.

Sadly the London Marathon had to confirm a tragic fatality. Matt Campbell (29), a chef from the Lake District and a sub-3h-runner, collapsed at mile 22 and died later in hospital. Matt ran in honour of his recently died father and fundraised for The Brathay Trust. Donations can be given at his
Fundraising Page.
