An meinem 12-Wochen-Trainingsplan fehlen mir insgesamt 110km.

11/04/02: Things packed, after checking everything twice. Nervous. Excited. 11.20pm. Take off in less than 7 hours. Finally. Look forward very much to meeting the internet friends which I feel already familiar with. Weatherforecast really promising. Dry, 11/51°, no wind. Nervous. Try to get to sleep now. Still mails arriving. Sorry, no answer from now on. Many thanks for all your good wishes. Butterflies.

07/04/02: A cautiously happy Uli is reporting today. It looks like I will come back just in time. Enthusiastically I completed 12 very hilly miles this sunday morning, without any problems. Hopefully nothing more will get sour during the final week. As a precaution I will stick to the rheuma-pills till race day. I have to admit I won't be free of dopes, but I announce it here openly, thats the way like the elite does it, don't they ;-). Comparing my 12-week- schedule I have missed 60 miles overall.  Nevertheless I will try to head for 3:30 from the start on, and will see, how far I will be able to hold the speed.

Good luck to all London runners. I am sure you will enjoy it, it will be a great day again.

04/04/02: I am sure you know the experience when you go out for a run and with every step you do you listen into your body if the injury reverts again. I was really scared when starting my test run today. But everything went well and I can breathe deeply tonight (do you hear?). 38 min without any problems. I didn't risk any more. Now I can hope again not only to make it to the start but also to the finish. Next sunday I will try to run the usual sunday circle (10m).

01/04/02: Don't panic! After 10 min I had to stop due to pain again and with numerous walking breaks I managed at least 30 min of running. It's not the meniscus, probably the outer tendon or the capsule. I hope all this is only an attendant symptom of the not completely cured flu and will disappear as fast as it occurred. Therapy: Another 2 rest days and rheuma tablets. Luckily I always have them in stock.

Here we go again. My target is still unchanged after 4 marathons:
To beat the 3:30 barrier.

According to my achieved times at shorter distances I should have no problem to get along with that. But on both of my serious attempts I failed to keep the speed in the final stage (1991 Hanover, 2001 Berlin), on two other occasions (2000 and 2001 London) illness resp. injury stopped me training properly.

Following this I increased the number of long distance runs carefully. It is surprising everytime again, how little time remains to place the proper schedule containing enough recovery phases.

You are welcome to download this small excel file.

Nachmeldegebühr in Hattingen geärgert).

31/03/02: No running for 6 days, thereof 4 spent in bed. For years I have not had such a severe flu like last week. Saturday I luckily was back to the local wood. During the first half hour I frightened the animal world by my stertorous coughing.  After this I was able to breathe quite free again and felt happy with my comeback. Today I had scheduled the usual sunday circle (10 miles). But the worst was yet to come. The complete rest of the recent days was not appreciated by my bones. A few miles on the way I noticed a pain on the outside of my right knee (normally the stronger one) which I never experienced before. Finally it forced me to shorten the workout. It feels like meniscus. Not really reassuring just two weeks before the marathon what I have now been training for since 3 months without any serious injury. Now I'm sitting here in company of my approved icebag, thinking nervously how far I will be able to run tomorrow morning
(will report).

24/03/02: The cough drops we got last sunday at Sylt as a goodie are very helpful now. Maybe the race was just the overkill for my immune system. However, this cold I caught on thursday is nearly compulsory to me every spring. Better it happens now than two weeks later. So I can be quite sure that I will recover in time and hopefully I will be able to do some decent runs at easter weekend. Then there remain 2 final weeks to taper. Two years ago I became a severe cold just the sunday before the race, and it was much worse than this time.

So long, I have to see the sofa again.

17/03/02: My island weekend including the Sylt-Lauf was a decent highlight of a runner's life. Only the weather could have been slightly better. As it happened to be the fog restricted the view to just 100 yards to the left and right of the route from the south end of the island to the most northern village of List (33,3km=20,7mls). I anticipated the race to be a mainly touristic event, what it turned out to be was a lovely, familliar meeting of mostly local runners. In particular, the 50 relay teams made a perfect example of a sport to enjoy. The event was completed by a fond and decent organization with a very good pasta party and the best presentation ceremony I ever came across. It lasted for two hours and wasn't boring at all.

In the north the climate is rough. We had to realize this by a chilly temperature of just 2°c after a frosty night  and a fresh breeze, which helped us during the first miles, but on the final, longish part blew right in our faces (there were locals who called it calm at a wind strength of 4). The isle is not as flat as it appears on the photo. The highest dune ascends ap to 50 meters. We didn't have to run up there but still had a good number of ups and downs on the final 6 miles. Even more we had stand that after 15 miles the tarmac ended and the following undulated dune path turned out to be a mixture of pebbles and sand.

Not just the climate is rough up in the north, the note can sometimes sound the same. But this means no harm you will notice later. The frisian people are outstanding self-confident. The spectatours on the route proved to be extremely cheerful, probably because most of them are on holiday and therefor a good mood. Even single on-lookers didn't stop to applause (may be the cold weather played a role too).

My own result I was quite content with. Instead of the planned 2:44 hrs I finished 2:41. Especially on the first half I was faster than scheduled while the heartrate was still lower (<130) than planned (<135). However, what still makes me insecure is that after finishing I couldn't imagine to run another 6 miles on an average mile of less than 8 min. This would make a marathon of 3:26, the time I want to get close to. If this would have been race day I hadn't managed.

There are three points to comfort me: 1. the route in London is much easier; 2. the crowd will push me to the finish; 3. in London I will start fully rested. This time it was the week containing the highest milage (50) so far what certainly prohibits a high performance.

To sum up the weekend: I didn't completely become a fan of the beloved island but certainly a fan of this wonderful running event.

By the way: I got my final instructions. Nr. 5997 (could be the target for my place ;-) , blue start.
to the schedule

10.03.02: A dicky training week ending conciliably. Anyway I planned a recovery week to put in, after I felt emaciated with my 3rd long run on consecutive sundays. But then it got even worse. My left calf muscle hardened and inhibited any proper running. With a tube of Ibuleve and a woolen calf warmer this was luckily cured till the weekend, earlier than expected. To handle it with care I cancelled my halfmarathon race. This I regard as the right decision as I propably would not have been able to finish in a sufficient time and maybe made everything worse (additionally I would have bothered about the late entry surcharge of 3 €). To make up for this disappointment I resolved to do a favour to myself and take part in a 20-mile-event on Sylt next sunday. This is Germany's most fashionable island and during summer I would urgently advise to avoid to set a foot on its ground. But at this time of the year it is not crowded, and it's a beauty spot, in most places (see photo). The race is fully booked since half a year but I just hope to raise a number at the prerace pasta dinner. If not I will just go for a long run on my own which I would enjoy as well. The island is around 400 miles north of where we live. German rail offers a discount return fare of $ 90 what the trip is certainly worth and still affordable (particularly as long as you live on separate budgets at home ;-) like we do). And it makes a nice change to spend the long run in a completely different environment (not to say: I definitely have to get out for some time). Overall the next week should bring the highest mileage (50) of my whole schedule. Hopefully my bones will stand it.

03/03/02:
To anticipate today's mood: The week ends with a low. Initially I felt recovered quite well of the torture on last saturday. So everything seemed alright to run the scheduled interval runs on thursday (6x1K 4:20, treadmill). The result: For 36 hours I was flabbergasted. But in this prime age one gets sensible. I canceled the gym workout for friday. With brilliant spring-like weather I again enjoyed a settled jog on saturday. And finally I was able to finish my long run of 3:11 hours somewhat uprightish. It's good luck I am not tied to any familiar obigations this weekend ... (Angelika is spending a riding holiday in Spain solo) I won't be able to performance any household or other activities today. I wonder how fellow runner Ian Painter is able to renovate his living room after running a 20-mile-race in the morning (well done, Ian)! There are some doubts lurking now wether the schedule is too heavy for me. Adding to this the fate of 2 suddenly diseased fellow runners (speedy recovery to Mike and Axel) makes me cogitating wether the targets of leisure runners like ourselves really make sense.

Anyway the schedule arranges a PB attack for next weekend. I don't feel to be in the mood for this. At least I have redesigned the plan for next week which will let me get to the start somewhat recovered. A fast half marathon will be a better help for London than a termless fulfilled routine.

17.02.02:

Wer Bertlich kennt weiß, was Windstärke 5 (in Böen 7) dort bedeutet. Dazu zeitweise waagerechter Regen.

24/02/02: Racing in Bad Salzuflen yesterday was very special. Just to arrive safely was an adventure itself. Showers of snow and sleet welcomed us when we approached the hills of the Teutoburger Wald. We made it just in time to the start after we had problems to find our way and nearly caused an accident on the icy road (and met a bullish domestic car driver). Our race through the local parcs turned out to be a very cushioning route. For 70% of 21 miles our joints enjoyed the really soft (not to say deep) mud. The rest of the route disappeared below snow and ice during the race. The frequent showers of sleet prevented overheating. With my speed of 8:28 min/mile at this memorable race I was highly pleased. It was a pity that I was not able to enjoy the big counter full of homemade cakes - due to missing signs of any remaining life in my body. Nevertheless this morning my legs didn't fight very long against running again.

I'm not sure wether my lower extremities will appreciate another 20-miler next sunday.
But I will giv'em a chance.

17/02/02: Step by step I now realize what kind of a challenge this schedule means to me. And finally I am amazed, that the past week fulfilled the plan. For comparison: After my last halfmarathon race at october 2000 in Newcastle I suffered from sore muscles for a whole week and simply was not able to run. This time I could add a 47-mile-week. The performance couldn't be better at this point of time. The 19-mile-jog today was pure enjoyment with perfect cold and sunny wintry weather. 3 hours of moving, and (nearly) nothing hurted. A weekend couldn't be more beautiful. Now I look forward to taking part at a 21-mile-race through parks and woods at Bad Salzuflen, a nice wellness resort around 70 miles to the east of where I live.

10/02/02:
Back to my schedule, luckily. I am really happy I could complete the planned 43,5 miles this week. Midweek the injury posted back again. I knew it is recommended to continue the cure for another 2 days after the pain is already gone. But I just forgot to do it. Hopefully it's okay now. At a closer look it was not only a week of 43,5 miles but 8 days with 58,4 miles. And a halfmarathon race at the end of it! I have to admit this schedule worried me a bit. But now there are 2 easy days to recover.

Also the race itself processed according to my plans. With a heartrate of 85% I managed a speed of 7:13 min/mile. The weather conditions were rather adverse. Very strong winds with sometimes horizontal rain. My time was 1:34:34 and comes  age graded for a 49-year-old as 1:26:15 which is even a new PB. Another minute might have been possible but like this it was a really nice race without to much torture (apart from the breeze). Calculated on marathon my finishing time was worth 3:20.
Bright prospects.

03/02/02: Although the workload remained well below the week's schedule I am still satisfied. On monday I was not able just to walk without pain. I paniced  and visited the orthopedist. He laconically diagnosed me with a "harmless tendon impact trauma". Anyhow he prognosed I would have to rest for at least a week, perhaps even two. He advised to ice the point (the icebag was already part of my evening dress). He prescribed his cure-all tablets Voltaren. The medicin caused gastrointestinal problems, however on wednesday the tendon did not ache any longer. With the rheumatism drug I would not have passed a doping test but on thursday I gave the treadmill a try for 5K. On friday I increased distance and speed to 11K.

I myself prescribed a rest day for saturday which makes me a little proud as in former times I would not have been able to resist. So on sunday I was fit for my scheduled long run (24K). Due to a familiy meeting in the morning I had to shift my run to the evening. 2 hrs and a quarter I sailed through various suburbs of our town, on pavements and dark narrow lanes. Quite a new experience but I would refrain from repeating this.

We have really strange weather these days. Temperature like in may, which is perfect for bikers, but my runners' body's circulation was not amused.

  Januar  Februar

January  february

27/01/02: A week with one highlight and two lows. On monday I catched minor knee problems due to a new drill (legs press) I tried at the gym. After three evenings accompanied by my icebag this was solved luckily. My long distance race in Apeldoorn (Netherlands, just 160K from home) was a real success. One of these pleasant events where you run in nature without lots of spectators. Just thousands of runners moving along narrow lanes through heathland and wood. With clouds down to the ground it was a very special mood to hear the endless pack of runners stepping on the tarmac without any talking. I really enjoyed this. And my race schedule happened to be perfect. During the final 5K (of 27.4) I was able to sharpen the speed without any discomfort and finished 2:09. The race calculator promises a comparable 3:26 on a whole marathon (wow!). But the week ends with a low. Supposably due to a crash at the food station at 15K I developed an injury at my left foot which I disregarded at first. Today it forced me to abort my regeneration run. Another job for my friend, the icebag.

20/01/02: Everything according to the schedule, just the sunday's circle was a bit too fast again. The oldish chaps I am running with are still feeling rather young. I will make up for it next tuesday with a really slow shuffle. On the whole I am quite happy to be fit while my Angelika was suffering from a severe cold this week.

13/01/02: Due to the low distance volume during these recovering weeks the speed of the few runs tends to be faster. Today the pack was obviously feeling spring coming and nobody thought of slowing down. I had no problems keeping the pace and it seems I would just have the form to run a fast 10K race. But that's not on the schedule now. Easy going and slowly building up longer distances is announced.

06/01/02: In theory my achieved time at the 15K-race (62:44) on new year's eve was worth for half marahon 1:31 and for full marathon 3:13. Wooh, what a target! But I have to admit that I was even faster by 30secs at the same race last year and I failed to confirm this time during the year. You will see how I will manage.
