4 weeks to go

Dear London runners,

Our race countdown is getting a louder sound now and some of the professional runners already have put their cards on the road.

Three-time London winner Martin Lel beat his main rival, Olympic Champion and defending London Champion Samuel Wanjiru, at the New Orleas Half Marathon. Zersenay Tadese (Eritrea), who had to quit last year at London, ran a new World Record (58:22) at the Lissabon Half Marathon. Last year's runner-up, Mara Yamauchi, outran Deena Kastor, 2006 London Champion, at the New York City Half Marathon.

While her competitors appear around the world's metropolises the defending champion Irina Mikitenko of Germany prefers to stick to well-proven provincial places. Once more she will take part in the traditional Easter Race of Paderborn, a Catholic Westphalian town.

Defending champions: Irina Mikitenko (GER) and Samuel Wanjiru (KEN)

The 30th London Marathon will be the first "Virgin" Marathon and probably it'll be the world's first marathon where the CEO of the main sponsor company will run himself. Sir Richard Branson will do his very first marathon!
Furthermore we'll enjoy Royal company. Princess Beatrice, ranked 5th in line to the throne, will make her marathon debut.

The London route is availabe by download for Google Earth.

Google Map adds up to an overall ascent of just 279 feet. So the route is really flat. But be aware that there are some short ramps to climb and unfortunately they mass in second half of the race. However, have in mind that there have been run world records in London - therefore it can't be that hilly ...

happy running
